PFAS, let’s talk about it…

This week the main question has been what is PFAS and why is everyone talking about it, again 😱?!

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals used since the 1940s in various industries for their durability and resistance to heat, water, and oil. Known as “forever chemicals,” they are found in non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, and some beauty products 🤷🏾‍♀️.

So why are PFAS used in beauty products?

PFAS are added to cosmetics for their ability to enhance texture and longevity. They help make products like mascara, eyeliner, foundation, and lipstick more durable and water-resistant, meeting consumer demands for high-performance beauty items🤩. The amount of PFAS used in beauty products is typically very low, making it unlikely to pose significant harm to humans.

PFAS’ persistence means they don’t break down easily, leading to accumulation in the environment 🌱. They can contaminate water, soil, and wildlife, affecting ecosystems globally 🫨. This has raised environmental concerns about their widespread use.

To address these concerns, the European Union has introduced regulations limiting PFAS in consumer products, including cosmetics 👌🏾. These changes are part of the European Green Deal, aiming to reduce environmental pollution and promote sustainability 👏🏾. The primary goal is to protect the environment, with reduced human exposure being an added benefit.

While PFAS improve the performance of beauty products, their environmental impact has led to stricter regulations in Europe. As awareness grows, both industry and consumers are moving towards safer, more sustainable alternatives.
